News: Teen killed, another injured in crash on I-79 near New Vernon Township

MERCER COUNTY, PA — A 19-year-old Pittsburgh resident died last Friday night after a rollover crash on Interstate 79 in New Vernon Township, according to WPXI.

The fatal accident occurred on the southbound lanes near mile marker 129, south of Greenville Sandy Lake Road. It was first reported at about 8:04 p.m.

Pennsylvania State Police said an 18-year-old man was driving southbound on the interstate when, for reasons still unknown, he lost control of his car. The vehicle veered off the roadway’s east side until it struck and went over an embankment. It then overturned and came to rest blocking the left northbound lane. Moments later, the wrecked car, which no longer had working lights, was hit on the passenger side by another vehicle. The impact of that crash sent both vehicles off the east side of the northbound highway.

The 19-year-old Pittsburgh resident, who was a passenger in the first car, died from their injuries at the scene.

Medics rushed the driver of the first car to an area hospital with injuries believed to be serious. PSP noted he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The second driver was not reported hurt.

No further information has been shared at this time, as an investigation remains in progress.
