Leonard's Story

A Left Turn that Left a Life Upended

The coast was clear until a distracted driver blew a stop sign and brought Leonard’s carefully crafted life to a halt. His faith was what revived it.

Leonard had woven his faith and his passions into the fabric of his life in a way most people dream of. He was a pastor at a local church, leading youth group and ministering to the congregation three times a week. He was a BBQ pit master and had built a successful catering business, and he worked in construction.

He was able to support his family and his community and still had time to keep a thriving garden with his wife Rose, growing tomatoes, peppers, squash, and green beans.

Leonard was strong, busy, and fully in command of his life. It was a life he was proud of and excited to take part in every day. Then a driver looked away from the road, and everything changed.

Before the accident, I was the head of the household, Leonard said. “I was used to being independent, being able to do what I wanted to do.”

The Coast was Clear Then the Truck Came Out of Nowhere

On the day of the accident, Leonard was working a construction job. He was behind the wheel of a loaded tri-axle dump truck and pulled up to a four-way stop, checked both directions, saw nothing coming, then started a routine left-hand turn.

That's when he saw the pickup truck.

Leonard could see that the driver wasn't looking at the road. He was turned around in his seat, focused on something or someone in the backseat. By the time he turned back around, it was too late.

The driver turned around just in time to see his truck hit mine.”

The impact was violent. Leonard’s head, shoulder, and the side of his body slammed into the door of his cab. His seatbelt kept him from the worst of it. The other driver’s truck took severe damage, and Leonard’s first thought in the aftermath wasn’t about himself. It was about whether the kids he’d seen in the other truck were buckled in.

In the stunned quiet after the collision, he had no idea how badly he was hurt.

He had to Give up the Pulpit and the Pit

In the days and weeks that followed, the true weight of Leonard's neck and back injuries revealed itself, and with it, the full dimension of what he had lost.

He had to stop his BBQ business completely. The work required lifting heavy cases of meat, chopping wood, and tending fires for hours on end. None of it was possible anymore. The catering gigs. The festivals. The identity he'd built as a pitmaster. Gone.

At church, Leonard could no longer stand for 45 minutes to deliver a sermon. Nor could he engage in the physical activities of the youth group he'd led for years. Two of the things that defined him, his ministry and his business, had been taken from him in an instant.

Rose, his wife of many years, now had to help him with everything. The loss of independence was the hardest part.

A Decision That Required Faith

Doctors confirmed Leonard had suffered serious damage to the discs in his neck and back. The disc in his neck needed to be replaced. The front of his spine would need a titanium wrap to hold it in place. And the surgery carried risks that no one takes lightly: he could die on the operating table, and he could also wake up paralyzed.

His doctor gave him time to decide.

Leonard prayed for two days. Then he called his doctor back and said, "Let's do this."

I decided to do the surgery because without it, I had no life. I couldn't move without pain.”

His lower back presented a different challenge. The discs there were also damaged in the crash, but the surgery carried greater risks and offered no guarantee of reducing his pain. Leonard and his doctors decided to hold off, opting for ongoing physical therapy instead, with the understanding that surgery might still be needed down the road.

This is the hidden complexity of serious accident injuries. The full picture doesn’t always emerge right away, and what a survivor needs medically and financially can take months or even years to fully understand.

Chaffin Luhana was His First and Only Call

It was during his recovery from surgery that Leonard realized he needed a truck accident lawyer. He'd seen a Chaffin Luhana commercial and he picked up the phone.

From the very first conversation, something shifted. The intake specialist listened carefully, asked the right questions, and made Leonard feel, for the first time in a long time, like someone was truly in his corner.

When his attorney, Patrick Booth called to follow up, the message was simple and direct, “We’re taking your case. We’re going to take care of you.”

Knowing Leonard couldn't travel, Patrick didn't ask him to come to the office. He drove to Leonard and Rose's home, sat down at their dining room table, and walked them through the details of their case, face to face, in language they could understand.

We received care, no matter who we spoke to, no matter what question we had," Rose said. "They never made us feel embarrassed because we didn't know something.”

How Chaffin Luhana Fought for Leonard and Rose

While Leonard focused on healing, Patrick and his team were handling everything behind the scenes.  Cases like Leonard's look straightforward from the outside: a distracted driver runs a stop and injures someone. But proving what Leonard’s neck and back injuries were worth and fighting for a fair settlement required far more than a police report

Here is what the Chaffin Luhana team did:

  • Gathered and reviewed all documentation from the accident, including the police report and evidence of the other driver’s negligence.
  • Collected and organized Leonard’s complete medical records, including surgical reports, imaging, treatment notes, and all documentation of his neck and back injuries.
  • Tracked his ongoing physical therapy visits, specialist appointments, and the possibility of future lower back surgery.
  • Handled all communication with insurance companies, so Leonard and Rose didn’t have to.
  • Built a case that accounted for his lost income, including the BBQ business he could no longer run, and the pastoral work he could no longer perform at full capacity.
  • Worked with medical professionals to document Leonard’s long-term prognosis, including the uncertain future of his lower back.
  • Kept Leonard and Rose informed and involved at every step, so they never felt lost or alone in the process.

They built a case that reflected not just the moment of the crash, but every loss that followed.

Moving Forward with a Renewed Sense of Joy

In the end, Chaffin Luhana secured a neck and back injury settlement that gave Leonard and Rose financial security, enough for Leonard to retire comfortably, with his medical costs covered and his future protected.

He was so satisfied with how his case was handled that when his own son was later injured in a serious truck accident, Leonard didn't hesitate to refer him to Chaffin Luhana.

Leonard still does physical therapy three days a week for his lower back. He has to be careful about heavy lifting, because too much strain could send him back to the hospital, or worse. The possibility of future back surgery hasn't entirely gone away.

He no longer runs a catering business. Instead, he BBQs for family and neighbors now and his ministry is quieter than it once was. But somewhere in the adjustment, Leonard and Rose found something unexpected: a renewed sense of joy.

They take slow walks together. They tend to their garden-- the tomatoes, the peppers, the squash and green beans are growing again.

Since I've recovered as much as possible, and the case is settled, I feel like I can live again," Leonard said. "I miss the BBQ business, but I've learned to enjoy what I can do, even though it's not what I used to be able to do. You can't dwell on the changes the injuries made to your life. You have to look forward to what you can accomplish.”

What Leonard's Story Means for You

Leonard's experience is one no one expects. But it's one many people face.

When a distracted or negligent driver causes a crash, the law is clear: they can be held accountable for the harm they cause. But serious injury cases, especially those involving spinal injuries, surgery, and long-term rehabilitation, are rarely simple.

It's not just about the moment of impact. It's about understanding the full picture: medical costs past and future, lost income, the loss of a business, the loss of a way of life. It's about making sure that a settlement doesn't just cover what's happened. It covers what might still be coming.

That's where the right legal team makes all the difference.

Leonard didn't have to navigate insurance companies, medical records, or legal strategy alone while recovering from spinal surgery. He could focus on healing, because someone was fighting for him.
