Scott's Story

Forgiveness and Perspective After a Motorcycle Crash Ended His Life-long Passion for Riding

Scott lived to ride his motorcycle. But when a serious crash left him fighting for his life, he needed a lawyer that would act quickly to get him the help he needed.

Scott was conscious just long enough to see the wheel of his motorcycle beside him on the pavement and to feel excruciating pain. He was barely holding on but held out his cell phone and told a voice hovering around him to call his partner, Mona. It would be four weeks before he opened his eyes again.

Scott had been riding motorcycles for decades, but this was his first serious accident. In fact, he spent so much time on the road, it was an essential part of who he was. It was where he went to breathe.

It's an escape because you have to pay closer attention — you can't think about your problems. You have to think about riding and what lies ahead," Scott said.

Before this motorcycle crash, Scott had never experienced an injury while riding that was any more serious than a scrape. It had never even occurred to him that he was at risk.

A Left Turn Too Late, a Crash so Serious He Almost Didn’t Survive

The day of the crash was ordinary in every way that mattered. Some friends had called to meet up for pizza, so Scott hopped on his bike and headed out. The weather was clear; the road was familiar. It was just a short ride — so short that he didn't bother putting on his helmet.

But then a kid driving toward him in the opposite lane tried to beat him to a left turn. The driver thought he had enough time to make it. He didn't.

Scott slammed into the rear panel of the car and was thrown 30 feet through the air. He was conscious just long enough to realize he’d been in a crash but would need to be resuscitated twice before slipping into a coma that would last a month. In the aftermath of the crash, Scott had his spleen removed, his ribs were smashed, his hands were broken, and his lungs collapsed. The road to recovery would be long.

The Quick Decision to Contact a Motorcycle Crash Lawyer

When Mona got the call that Scott had been in a crash, she didn't wait. She'd seen Chaffin Luhana's billboards on her drive to work more times than she could count, and in that moment, she knew exactly who Scott needed: a motorcycle crash lawyer who would act quickly while he was fighting for his life.

Scott's accident happened on a Friday. By Monday, Chaffin Luhana had already taken the case. By the time Scott woke up, his motorcycle crash lawsuit had been settled.

Waking Up to a New Reality

When Scott finally opened his eyes, his first question wasn't about his injuries. It was about his bike.  Mona had to break the news it was totaled. Then she had to walk him through everything else: the crash, the injuries he'd survived, and, finally, the silver lining, that he would be financially taken care of.   Scott spent three more months in the hospital, relearning how to walk and how to use his hands. When he came home from the hospital, there were moments Mona had to remind him to simply breathe.

She’s my angel. She kept me alive.

Scott will never completely recover from his injuries from the crash. He still has numbness across parts of his ribcage and lifting his arms at certain angles causes sharp pain in his back and shoulders. Perhaps the most devastating of all, he lost enough grip strength in his hands that it’s no longer safe for him to ride a motorcycle at all.

“I’m sad and mad about the fact that I can’t ride anymore. But at least I’m alive. That’s what matters,” said Scott.

Scott also lives with PTSD from the crash. He admits to being a risk taker before the crash, acting first and thinking second. Now, he’s very tentative when he drives his car and second guesses every decision.

"I'm afraid of being hit. I wish people would slow down and take a look around to make sure nobody was around before they do anything stupid."

Mona hasn't gotten back on her own motorcycle since the crash either. Sometimes the shrapnel from hits loved ones just as hard as the drivers and riders involved.

A Law Firm That was Committed From the Start

What stood out to Scott wasn't just that Chaffin Luhana settled his case quickly; it's that they stayed invested in his recovery long after the legal fight was over. The firm kept checking in, making sure Scott was healing and that he and Mona had what they needed.

I never had a lawyer that really cared. They called to check on me, and they visited me at my house. You couldn't ask for more. You definitely have to call Chaffin Luhana."

Without the settlement, Scott would have walked out of the hospital owing over a million dollars in medical bills on top of everything his body had already been through. Instead, he was able to put that weight down and focus on getting better.

Finding Forgiveness and Perspective

Scott looks at life differently now. And somehow, even after everything, he doesn't carry anger toward the young driver who caused the wreck.

"I was young too, and I would take chances. So I can't really blame him. I'm happy to be alive."

That's the kind of perspective that doesn't come easily. It’s earned through four weeks of darkness, three months of relearning how to move, and a long road back toward a new normal. Scott is still riding that road. Just not on a motorcycle anymore.

What Scott’s Story Means for Others

Motorcycle crashes like Scott's can happen in an instant, in good weather, and when the rider has done everything right. When drivers fail to yield, misjudge a turn, or simply don't look twice for a rider before pulling out, they can hit a motorcyclist and cause serious, life-threatening injuries.

The law is clear: drivers have a responsibility to check their surroundings and make sure the road is clear before they act. When they don't, and a motorcyclist pays the price, they can be held accountable.  But motorcycle crash lawsuits can be complex.

Getting the settlement right isn’t just about what happened in the moment. It’s about understanding the full impact the crash has on your life. Medical costs, lost wages, hobbies that you can no longer enjoy, PTSD, loss of mobilization, and even necessary home modifications are just some of the costs that should be considered when determining a motorcycle crash settlement.  But motorcycle crash lawsuits can be complex.

That's where the right legal support can make a difference.

For Scott, having a motorcycle crash lawyer take his case within days meant that he and Mona didn't have to face the insurance companies, paperwork, or uncertainty alone. It also meant crucial evidence could be preserved, and witness statements could be collected while memories were fresh.

If you or a loved one are in a motorcycle crash, the sooner you reach out to a motorcycle crash lawyer, the better your chances are of securing a fair settlement.
