Sharon’s Story
An Everyday Walk Changed Everything
She did everything right. A distracted driver changed her life anyway.
It was a beautiful, bluebird day in early summer when Sharon went for her usual lunchtime walk. She followed the same route she’d taken for nearly 20 years—familiar streets, familiar turns, a quiet break in the middle of a busy day. The birds were singing, the air was fresh and life was full—three kids, a husband, a thriving career managing a medical office, and a newly bought house with plans to renovate. Sharon was happy.
Then, in a single moment, everything changed.
Before the accident, I loved being busy, Sharon said. I was always doing ten things at once to keep everything running.

A Routine Crossing Turned Into a Life-Altering Accident
Most of Sharon’s walk took her along backroads, but there was one busy intersection near a shopping center she had to cross. She’d done it hundreds of times.
As she stepped into the crosswalk and cars stopped to let her pass, she noticed another car coming toward her. She thought it would stop like the others.
It didn’t. Then everything went black.
The next thing Sharon remembered was a voice saying, “We’re going to have to put staples in her head.” Then brain-splitting pain. Then black again.
At home, her husband Mike was working outside with their son when his phone rang. The screen read: “Sharon Wife.” When he answered, an unfamiliar man was on the line telling him his wife had been hit by a car and was lying unconscious on the road. Then the call ended.
Adrenaline pumping, it took Mike about 30 minutes to learn where the ambulance had taken her. He and his son raced to the hospital. Unsure what to expect, Mike told his son to wait outside and walked into the ICU alone. Seeing Sharon on the bed, bandaged and unconscious, shook him to his core.
You never think that something like this is going to happen to you and then you’re staring at it. There are so many unknowns, Mike said.
The doctors hadn’t yet diagnosed Sharon’s injuries, so Mike sat next to his wife and wondered what was next.
The Driver was Distracted. But What Would Happen Next?
When Sharon finally opened her eyes, she was relieved to see her husband. It would be the last relief she’d feel for many months. She was in severe pain, and after a visit from a police officer who’d been at the scene, she learned the driver who hit her had been texting while driving.
Mike knew Sharon had done everything right—she was in the crosswalk, following the rules. But knowing that wasn’t enough.
Who was responsible? How would they prove it? And what would Sharon need—not just immediately, but months or years into the future?
Sitting in the hospital parking lot, Mike realized something: focusing on her recovery alone wasn’t going to be enough. He needed help protecting her future.
That’s when he remembered a Chaffin Luhana billboard he had seen.
From the first phone call, it felt like I knew them and they knew me. It was very relaxed, said Mike.
Recovery Wasn’t a Straight Line
At first, doctors told Sharon she had one broken leg, a broken collar bone, six broken ribs, and a traumatic brain injury. She would need round-the-clock care in the ICU until she was stable enough to go home.
At her 30‑day checkup, she learned it was even worse: she had not one broken leg but two, and her collar bone would need surgery and months of physical therapy before she could use her arm again. After she was released from the hospital a second time, she went to a follow‑up appointment with her primary care doctor for pain in one leg and was sent straight back to the hospital for blood clots.
Sharon wondered if it would ever end. “That was a mental setback. I was thinking, ‘What’s going to be my future? Is it just going to be endless problems where I’m in and out of the hospital?’”
Unfortunately, this is a very common experience for accident survivors. Many don’t know the full extent of their injuries, or how those injuries will change their future, until months after the accident.
Luckily, Mike had recently retired and could care for Sharon. He bathed her, brushed her hair, and drove her everywhere she needed to go.
“I couldn’t have done it without him,” Sharon said.
Sharon was determined to get back to who she was before the accident. She went to physical therapy regularly to regain mobility in her shoulder and arm, paying hundreds of dollars every week even with insurance. She also went back to work. It was there she realized there was one injury she couldn’t heal, no matter how hard she tried.
“I have short‑term memory loss,” Sharon said. “I used to perform well under pressure and was able to do 10 things at once. After the accident, I would have to remind myself why I’d taken a file out.”
She wrote reminders to herself, but she couldn’t do her job the way she once had.
How Chaffin Luhana Helped Carry the Weight
While Sharon and Mike focused on getting through each day, the legal team at Chaffin Luhana handled everything happening behind the scenes.
“They were relentless, compassionate and professional,” said Sharon. “They did all of the legwork for us. When I think of all the resources we would have had to come up with on our own, without them, there’s no way we would have been able to do it.”
In cases like Sharon’s, proving fault isn’t always as simple as saying the driver was distracted. It requires evidence, documentation, and a full understanding of how the injuries affect someone’s life—not just immediately, but long-term.
While Sharon and Mike focused on her recovery, the legal team was doing what injury lawyers are supposed to do in a case like this:
- Gathering and reviewing the police report, records, witnesses, and citations related to texting and driving.
- Requesting and organizing all of Sharon’s hospital and medical records, bills, and documentation of the full extent of her injuries.
- Tracking her physical therapy, medications, and specialist visits.
- Communicating with the insurance companies so Sharon and Mike didn’t have to.
- Making sure the claim included not just current bills, but also her lost income and the impact of her brain injury on her career.
- Working with her doctors to get a full understanding of her long-term issues.
- Keeping Sharon and Mike updated so they could have peace of mind.
They built a case that reflected not just the moment of the accident, but everything that followed.

Moving Forward, With Stability
After the work that Chaffin Luhana did, Sharon was finally able to rest. She retired at 59. Her medical bills were handled and she and Mike had financial security for their golden years. She had financial security for her and Mike’s golden years. They were even able to make their planned renovations to their home.
Chaffin and Luhana were my angels, Sharon said. Their help was priceless.
Now, Sharon keeps her walks to parks or the treadmill—some traumas stay with you. But today, she and Mike are enjoying retirement, and she’s regained full use of her legs and arm.
“I feel very blessed. With everything I have going on, I’ve healed very well.”
What Sharon’s Story Means for Others
Sharon’s experience is something no one expects, but it’s something many people face.
When you are hit by a distracted driver, the law is clear: drivers have a responsibility to pay attention, follow traffic signals, and yield to pedestrians. When they don’t, they can be held accountable.
But these cases are rarely simple.
It’s not just about what happened in the moment—it’s about understanding the full impact. Medical costs. Lost income. Long-term effects like memory loss. The emotional toll of trying to rebuild your life.
That’s where the right legal support can make a difference.
In Sharon’s case, having a team gather records, handle communication, and fight for a fair outcome meant that she and Mike could focus on healing instead of navigating everything alone. It also meant her settlement reflected not just what happened that day, but everything that followed, and gave her the chance to move forward with security and dignity.
