The FDA's Black Boxed Warning
The FDA recently warned that patients taking a popular gout medication face an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, heart-related death, and death from all other causes.
In February 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a safety communication regarding the potential dangers associated with the a specific gout medication. This new safety warning is an update to a prior warning from November 2017, where the FDA make a public announcement that they were investigating potential links between this gout drug and heart-related deaths.
Following a recent post-marketing study, the FDA concluded that using this gout medication does increase the risk of death, not only from heart-related issues, but all possible causes.
As a result of this conclusion, the FDA is requiring the drug manufacturer to include a black boxed warning (the FDA’s most prominent warning) on the product as well as an updated medication guide, alerting physicians and patients of the potential health risks associated with the drug.
