News: Man fatally hit by train while riding dirt bike in Charleroi

WASHINGTON COUNTY, PA — A 36-year-old man died late Tuesday morning after being struck by a train while riding a dirt bike in Charleroi, reports CBS News Pittsburgh.

The fatal incident occurred at the 5th Street crossing, near the Rite Aid store, shortly before noon.

Details remain limited at this time, but witnesses told authorities red lights were flashing and the gates at the crossing were lowered at the time of the crash.

One bystander said the victim appeared to get around the gate and was trying to leave the tracks just before he was hit by the Norfolk Southern train.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed authorities.

A section of 5th Street was shut down as Norfolk Southern crews assessed the lights, crossing bells and gates at the crossing.

No further details have been released at this time, but nearby residents and merchants noted pedestrians often attempt to cross the tracks while the gates are down.

An investigation by Pennsylvania State Police was underway.
